A few years back, astronomical international roaming (often referred to as global roaming) costs meant that most travelers did not take their mobile phone with them when they traveled overseas.

Travelers often took an international phone card with them overseas. These international calling cards did (and still do) offer great international calling rates, but there was always the issue of finding a landline capable of making international calls. You also run the risk that if you lose your international phone card there is no way to cancel it- so whoever finds or steals your international calling card can use all the nice credit you paid for and there is nothing you can do about it.

International Roaming SIM Cards have left the international calling card virtually obsolete. With an International Roaming or Global Roaming SIM card, you can constantly be contactable without having to pay international roaming costs to receive calls, and without having to worry about huge global roaming costs when you make calls.

Despite these huge improvements in global telecommunications, you will still face exorbitant costs whilst traveling overseas with your home country GSM mobile phone number. This is because you are not using your home network. You need an international roaming SIM card if you are a regular overseas traveler or you are considering traveling overseas for an extended period of time. These SIM cards are somewhat like pre-paid phone service. You put the card in your GSM-capable phone and have international roaming coverage from wherever the card is valid.

When purchasing an international roaming SIM card, remember that it is vital for you to check: How much initial credit you will receive.

The Costs- there may be some countries where you still pay an incoming call cost, but it will probably be substantially cheaper than your standard mobile. Credit Expiry- Does the credit you purchase expire, or will it be there for next time you go overseas?

Does it work? This may sound silly, but most International Roaming SIMS, like actual mobile phones will only work in some countries. Make sure the SIM you wish to purchase works in the countries you wish to travel to.
