When you need to find public records, you can go about things the old fashioned way, or you can see what you get when you do it through the Internet. Both are effective, but one can work more quickly than the other. The Internet has brought more information than ever to your fingertips, but it is not always complete. What you find often depends on how well you search and if you know where to search first.

You will find your public records in certain places, but you should think about what you are using them for before you start. If you need vital stats on anyone for the reasons of genealogy, you want to start with searching sites that specialize in older records. There are some that require a fee, and some that have information posted by volunteers totally free of charge. You can find birth, death, marriage, divorce, census, cemetery, and immigration records if you look around for what you want.

If you are doing a background check on someone, your sources are going to be different. You won’t want what you can find on genealogy sites because that information is mostly for those that are no longer alive. They try to keep some types of records for those still living out of databases for privacy reasons. However, you can see what you find through search engines and state web sites that often tell you how to get these records.

When you don’t find what you want through those sources, you have a few options. One would be to get in your car and drive to your county courthouse, or even your state courthouse if you live close enough. There you can access many types of pubic records with a little research and hard work. This is not ideal, but it might be the only way when it comes to hard to find records.

If you are not quite ready to do that, and you want to give the Internet one last shot, you can always find one site that will search all public records for you that are to be found online. They come up for you in an easy listing and you can chose the one you think matches the person of which you are searching.
